Bishop Henry Scriven
Henry was born in England in 1951 and was educated at Repton School and Sheffield University where he studied Biblical Studies. After a year working in a steel mill supervised by the Sheffield Industrial Mission he went to Seminary at St John’s Nottingham and was ordained in 1975. Four years in the Diocese of London was followed by two in the Diocese of N. Argentina with the South American Missionary Society (UK). When the Falklands war started the family left for Little Rock, Arkansas, where Henry was Assistant Rector for Education at Christ Church (1982-1983).
Work with SAMS continued in Spain with the Spanish Episcopal Reformed Church from 1984-1990, then for five years he was Chaplain of the British Embassy Church in Madrid (Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe of the Church of England). In 1995 he was consecrated as Suffragan Bishop in Europe (in St Paul’s Cathedral by Archbishop George Carey) and spent 7 years travelling around the 40 countries of that diocese. He was also made Assisting Bishop for the Convocation of American Churches in Europe by Bishop Browning in May 1995.
He started work in Pittsburgh on 1st September 2002 as Assistant Bishop. Henry is married to Catherine who is a US citizen though she was born in Spain of diplomatic parents. They have two children, Anna (b. 1979) who is married to Tom, living in South London and expecting her first child in December 2007, and Joel (b. 1983) who is married to Sarah and living in Oxford, working on his doctorate in the Oxford University Environmental Change Institute.
Bishop Henry is currently providing episcopal ministry at the request of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, pending the 2009 start of his new missions leadership position in England with SAMS/CMS.
