On August 16, Christ Church, Greensburg conducted a special blessing during their 10:30 a.m. service, though not of the usually expected variety. This was a blessing of backpacks, in preparation for the start of the new school year. Over 25 children from the parish participated, excitedly bringing their bright and colorful packs to church for the event. The Rev. Larry Knotts, rector of Christ Church, provided the blessing for the gathered students and school gear, while the Rev. Peggy Means, assistant priest, handed out prayer cards for the zippered pouches. Christ Church’s fellowship ministry provided an ice-cream social for parents and children following the service.

In keeping with this theme, along with a dedication to service, Christ Church is collecting backpacks for donation to local organizations which serve children in need, such as the Welcome Home Shelter in Greensburg, and the Blackburn Center. A well-stocked and well-thought backpack can do much to ease the difficult transitions these children often face. Anyone interested in donating time, talent or backpacks to this project should contact Ester Yant at 724-834-4217.
