On Saturday, August 23, Shepherd’s Heart, Uptown, will host a "Stand Down" for area homeless veterans from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with dinner to follow. The military term refers to the process of granting tired soldiers a chance to leave the battlefield for rest, medical care and recuperation.

Allegheny County, local hospitals and service organizations are sponsoring this event in the hopes of helping the hundreds of area homeless who have served their country in the military. In addition to providing needed medical and physical aid, sponsors will be helping participants with housing needs, benefit issues and employment searches.
