Meet the Candidates
The candidates were chosen during a search process that began in earnest in April 2021 and will culminate with the election of a new bishop at the Special Convention in April 2022. Search Committee members, a mixture of clergy and laity, were chosen by the Standing Committee and met weekly by Zoom throughout the year with two in-person retreats. Bishop Bill Murdoch advised the committee and attended most meetings as well. Final candidates were visited in November and December of 2021 by search committee delegations consisting of at least three members. Candidates and their spouses then visited Pittsburgh in early January 2022. This was an opportunity to become familiar with the city and record introductory videos.
The next step in the election process will be a series of what are called “walkabouts” to be held in various locations throughout the diocese. The walkabouts will provide an opportunity for the upcoming deputies and alternates to Special Convention to meet and get to know the candidates. The walkabouts will be held the evenings of March 21 (Church of the Ascension, Oakland), March 22 (Trinity, Washington), and March 23 (Christ Church, Fox Chapel). Each of the walkabouts will be video recorded and will be available one week following on the diocesan website for the entire diocese to view. Depending on the status of Covid-19, registration for walkabouts may be required and covid protocols will be observed. Please watch for further announcements.
During each walkabout, candidates will be asked to respond to a series of questions. Clergy, lay deputies to Special Convention, and other members of diocesan churches are invited to submit questions for consideration using the form at the bottom of this page. The Search Committee will use these questions to inform their decision regarding the discussion questions for each walkabout. The deadline for submission of questions is March 1.
On Thursday, March 24 there will be a clergy gathering at St. Alban’s, Murrysville, to meet together and hear further from the candidates. All clergy are warmly invited to attend. Further details of all gatherings will be announced on the diocesan website.
The Special Electing Convention is scheduled for Saturday, April 30 at St. Stephen’s, Sewickley. God willing, ratification of the election result by the ACNA College of Bishops will happen June 13. Consecration of the new Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh is scheduled to be held at Church of the Ascension in Oakland on the afternoon of Saturday, August 6.
